AP Cafe

New York | 4th of July

This was the last day of my endless and intense trip to New York and Toronto with my boyfriend. We had spent two weeks in the burning heat having bbqs on rooftops, dancing in the pouring rain in Brooklyn, falling head over heels for the best tourist attraction in NYC and going through art galleries to secret bars and I was bummed to see it come to an end. Blog-post-the-AP-CafeWaking up felt gloomy. Even the city lay rainy and quiet. The remains of our colourful late nights in North America had built up to one monstrous hangover. The invoice from having nonstop fun has to arrive eventually I guess. Whilst previous mornings we had shot out of bed in anticipation, we now dragged through our morning rituals in silence, dreading having to say farewell in just a few hours. Blog-post-the-AP-Cafe-in-NYCBlog-post-the-AP-Cafe-in-Bushwick-NYCBrooklyn lay damp and grey and abandoned on its Independence Day. Claire, Daniel, Nicolas and I walked its wet streets down to the AP Cafe for brunch. The one we went to on our first day of the trip and that I fell in love with, if you remember? Blog-post-Nicolas-at-the-AP-Cafe Blog-post-Nicolas-at-the-AP-Cafe-in-Bushwick-We claimed one of the many empty tables and placed our order. Being in such a pretty environment makes it impossible to feel sulky and once the iced coffees and donuts arrived at our table the puffy eyed boys were back being chatty and giggly. There is something especially lovely with seeing young men giggle together.Blog-post-the-AP-Cafe-in-Bushwick-Blog-post-Daniel-at-the-AP-Cafe-in-Bushwick-Blog-post-AP-Cafe-in-Bushwick-NYCThe food arrived shortly after and we all got in a good mood and brought up all kinds of stories from the past weeks of madness.Blog-post-Claire-and-Linn-at-the-AP-Cafe-in-Bushwick- Blog-post-Claire-&-Linn-at-the-AP-Cafe-in-Bushwick-<3 300 days of hangover <3 Blog-post-AP-Cafe-in-NYCOutside the rain fell on us in pebble sized drops and dried up almost instantly after crashing into the pavement. The four of us stood in a row, backs against a garage, hoping for the rain to seize. When it didn’t the four of us ran through it and into the only open venue around, Roberta’s. We thought fuck it it’s our last day and America’s Independence Day after all so we might as well celebrate.Blog-post-Roberta's-pizza-in-BushwickIn paper mugs covered in colourful characters from some sort of children’s book Nicolas handed us frozen margaritas. There is a time for everything and the Independence Day seems like the perfect one for alcoholic slushies. Under the cover of a party tent we sat with our drinks whilst the rain soaked our surroundings and kids in all American flag-clothing ran around us. Nicolas-in-Bushwick Richardson-HardwareBlog-bar-in-BushwickSomehow the most gloomy of days transformed into something exuberant. The sun came out, sizzling the city with all its inhabitants and with it came our last American burgers, because what’s the last day in NYC without hamburgers?Blog-Daniel-in-BushwickBlog-Drinks-with-Claire-Daniel-and-Nicolas-in-BushwickUnfortunately the hours for our departure disappeared too fast and suddenly it was nighttime. We stood a little drunk by the train station with our heavy suitcases hugging Nicolas and Claire goodbye. For now, and maybe quite a while until next time.

As our flight took off into darkness we flew over New York City in all its prime. I shook Daniel’s shirtsleeve and pointed to the window.

– Daniel look outside! Omg you have to see this! It’s magical.

He turned his head towards the window and let out a wow. Beneath us fireworks went off everywhere. Colourful explosions popped up on every block like a Disney movie. It didn’t cease but as the city grew smaller one could still see the sparks flying over it as we left the States and our North American holiday behind us.

NEW YORK DAY 1 – AP CAFE, SATURDAY SURF, SOHO & TATTOOS

Turns out New York in June is boiling hot and I absolutely love it. As soon as we landed we headed over to Frida’s rooftop for drinks before jetlag caught up with us and we fell asleep before midnight. The morning after we woke up to the sound of the fan and the pigeons in our window.

It was raining outside but still insanely hot. Nicolas brought us around the corner here in Bushwick for brunch. The place was full so we put our names up on the list and headed over to the AP Cafe.AJ-at-AP-Cafe-New-YorkWe sat down for a coffee in the gorgeous concrete cafe and got to meet his girlfriend AJ for the first time.

When it had been an hour we walked the wet streets back to Cafe Ghia.

For some weird brunch burgers that were heaven.

Saturday-Surf-New-YorkNew York was stunning and wet as we took the subway to Soho and the store Saturday Surf where they have the prettiest back patio.Saturday-Surf-New-York-CityWhere we had some iced coffees, just as you should in the summer.Twins-Daniel-and-Nicolas-PilapratNicolas-and-Daniel-Pilaprat-New-YorkAnd these brothers got to catch up a bit.Daniel-and-Nicolas-Pilaprat,-New-YorkI mean seriously. <3Twins-Nicolas-and-Daniel-Pilaprat Little-Italy-New-YorkLike millions of others we walked around Manhattan from Soho to Little Italy to China Town all the way up to East Village. This city is so pretty it’s ridiculous.Daniel-in-Little-Italy-New-YorkBut the best thing is that I get to hang out 24/7 with this one. Damn you long distance relationship. Frida-Regeheim,-New-YorkBack in Brooklyn we met up with my star Frida who’s been in New York for the past three months interning at an advertising agency.Frida-Regeheim-WilliamsburgI was ecstatic obviously, as she is one of my favourite people. We all went to Baby’s All Right for some tequila slushies.Hurra-TattooFrida was newly tatted up with a little hurra from a drunken night in Manhattan. The rest of the night was spent eating mexican food to hiphop tunes and dancing in some divy bar in Williamsburg. New York, you are pretty great actually.
