TORONTO – burgers, brothers & bourbon

For those of you who are new here: My bf Daniel is Canadian and for Christmas this year we decided to go spend it with his family as last year we went to see mine in Kenya. I couldn’t wait to spend 2 weeks with him as we are in a long distance relationship, him being in London and me in Stockholm. After landing in Toronto on the Sunday we had midnight pizzas in Daniel’s parents’ kitchen, catching up with them and the siblings. The 11 hour flight had absolutely murdered me and spending an additional 6 hours at Warsaw’s neglected airport didn’t help. So I crashed in bed with Daniel, just the way I have missed doing. Nicolas,-Toronto-dec-14 The morning after the boys’ mum made us scrambled eggs before they brought me down town. Daniel,-Toronto-dec-14 The Toronto streets were icy dry but sunny and we checked out some shops, discussing vixen females, skateboarders and shitty art. P&L-Burger,-Toronto But what’s a day with these twins without a burger? So we went to Parts & Labour for some greasy goodness. Nicolas,-P&L-BurgerNicolas,-P&L-Burger,-Toronto We leave feeling stuffed. Street cars pass us as we walk through the different neighbourhoods. Daniel and Nicolas tell me stories of their teen years, showing me the bars they had messy break ups and shops where they bought girls jeans because the boys’ ones weren’t skinny enough. As dusk falls we enter some dark, glammy bar where there are only the bartender, two stray men and us. We sit down at the shiny, wooden counter and order bourbon on the rocks like we think we are too cool for school. There are candles lit all around and they sway to the americana tunes as we discuss love at first sight, norms around female sexuality in Scandinavia vs America and why you shouldn’t or perhaps should sleep with your friend’s little sister. At-Jess-Place,-Toronto A few hours later Jess is having us and the twins’ sister Claire over for hell of a dinner at her flat. Jess is the pro of veggie dishes and doesn’t let us down this night either. Nicolas-at-Jess' Me in Sweden, Nicolas in NYC, Daniel in London, Claire in Toronto and Jess a globetrotter there was too much catching up to do. This past year fake royals were born, boyfriends were shit heads, parents got high and too many things happened in pop culture, as always. Jess As Jess is the coolest person ever making sure that i.e. powerful photoshoots on black lava beaches happen, I beg her to tell me more stories. Even though there seem to be tons there are not nearly enough for me. Meanwhile she runs around handing out champagne and cupcakes and compliments. Meow,-Toronto This is Meow, her stunning diva of a cat. Steven,-Toronto 2014 More lovely Canadian friends drop in to welcome us and they hug us and make us do shots whilst they tell us how much they’ve missed us. I’m not sure whether it’s just this group of people of Canadians in general, but there aren’t any more genuinely caring people on this earth. There are discussions about muses and music and Nicolas ends up getting his nails painted black whilst Jess showers the rest of us in Christmas presents. We refill our glasses with golden liquids until the jetlag has me pulled down to the ground with tiredness and it’s time to jump on the street car back home. Canada, you’re too good.   Linn
