KENYA // NAIROBI DAY 3

1 We wake up early as always. A holiday away from London and nightclubs and bars and hiphop dancing is all we needed. Instead we eat mango on the roof terrace and play dancy rock music until the rest of the family wakes up. 3 After brunch we get dressed and head out to Karura Forest to rent some bikes. SO SPORTY! 4 We cycled deeper in, down the red trail, the tree shadows like scarce mosaic over us. 12 Off the bikes and into the forest. 11 Under giant trees. 13 And pass by the old slave caves with rooms where first the Arabs and then the British completely abused the Kenyan people. So scary. 15 Moa. 5 Finally we got down to the rapids, hidden down in an overgrown valley with trees touching the clouds. 6 And little waterfalls. 14 Saga. 7 And a bigger waterfall. 8 Like in paradise. 9 So we sat down for some salami, brie and olive baguettes. 1917 And then nothing could keep us from diving right in. 18 Just a bit of the Djungle Book / the Lion King / Lost but freezing. 16 My wicked little sister. 10 Finished and more than pleased. And that magical day gets to wrap up our trip to Kenya.   Linn

KENYA // NAIROBI DAY 2

3 To a hot Nairobi we wake up and drive down to Kibera, the biggest slum in the whole of East Africa which inhabits over 1 million people. 1On narrow dirt roads we drove deeper into the slum, tin sheds narrowly lined up to create the maze of poverty. In the outskirts we find the Power Women Group, where I used to volunteer work almost every week from 2005-2007 as well as the orphanage next door. 4 This is Elizabeth and Grace, two of the founders. The Power Women group is a group of twenty HIV-positive women who united in 2004 to help each other battle the stigma and the economic and social discrimination of people with HIV. They run a micro investment association where the women can lend small amounts of money to get by. They make and sell jewellery, they support each other socially and economically when they are ill due to HIV and they inform the surrounding about the disease. They also hold courses in self-defence and help women who get raped. WHICH MEANS THEY ARE KICKASS HEROES AND ABSOLUTELY AWESOME!!! 2 They told Daniel the story of the group and how they had finally saved up enough money to build a toilet in their headquarters (which is a massive improvement considering there is among 1000 people per toilet in Kibera) They are now opening a hair salon and a nursery, and will hopefully branch out to other towns in Kenya, so that women want have to move to Nairobi to receive support. Go in and like their Facebook page and purchase some of the jewellery they sell to help there wicked fight, like true sisters. 5 Then we said bye to the superstars of this world. And I spoke to Elizabeth and they are really keen on collaborating with other women around the world and also more than open to suggestions/projects. So let me/them know if you have any suggestions and we’ll fucking get stuff going!   Linn

KENYA // NAIROBI DAY 1

2 2014 and Nairobi is getting hot. The following two days are spent just hanging around the flat, drinking espresso and watching films, walking to the small markets but most of all just spending time with my family. 1 Together with my parents and Saga we head to Art Caffe for lunch. Discussing countries and travels and careers. 3 The food on this continent is too tasty. 4 My mum. 8 And my dad who happened to turn 48 this day. 6 We gave him a photography book about the developing of Kenya from the 1800s, with wars and imperialism and independence and all, and then we went to his favourite seafood restaurant. 7 To eat steaks (?) and drink red wine. 5 And celebrate the fact that he is our favourite person in the world.   Linn
